The Biltmore Estate
Hi Dolls!
On my recent mini vacation to Asheville, I finally had the opportunity to visit The Biltmore Estate. I have wanted to go there since I saw Richie Rich starring Macaulay Culkin. Back then I had no clue who the Vanderbilts were or what the Gilded Age was.
When I was in elementary school, my school took a field trip to the Biltmore. It wasn’t available for everyone, just those in the gifted program. I was in a gifted program of sorts then, but for math…And us math nerds weren’t eligible to go. I was devastated. I let that devastation fester and stew for all these years….and now finally, twenty years later I got to go. Suck it my 2nd grade teachers!
In all honestly, I’m kind of glad I didn’t get to go as a kid because I don’t think I would have had the same appreciation for the history. You see, one of my degrees is in history, but my love for history didn’t happen until I got into high school. I mean, I was a math nerd before then.
When we arrived in Asheville, the first stop was breakfast and then straight to the Biltmore. No hotel check in, no nothing. I needed to see this house ASAP…and boy, it didn’t disappoint. We took a tour inside (sorry I didn’t take pictures) and it was beautiful and decorated for Christmas. To be able to see how the George Vanderbilt lived was insane. Good grief, that’s a lot of money! Afterwards we walked around the grounds and took pictures.
I have studied the Gilded Age for years, but to actually see it and understand the wealth involved was crazy. I hope to go back soon for a more in-depth tour and bring my Momma, who would love it.
xoxo
